China\u2019s human spaceflight agency, CMSA, regularly released orbital data <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/WITxwb6fN_0wk-SgHJhDAw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updates <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the rocket stage but provided no predictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/USSPACECOM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#USSPACECOM<\/a> can confirm the People\u2019s Republic of China Long March 5B <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CZ5B?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CZ5B<\/a> rocket re-entered the atmosphere over the south-central Pacific Ocean at 4:01am MDT\/10:01 UTC on 11\/4. The Mengtian module <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/final-module-docks-at-chinas-tiangong-space-station\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">successfully docked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the station 13 hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with China\u2019s previous space station module launches, the Long March 5B first stage also acts as the upper stage for the mission and entered orbit, which is exceptional in international spaceflight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stage reentered over the Pacific Ocean but not before causing issues for air traffic in Europe, due in part to the uncertainty in predicting reentry events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A section of airspace over northern Spain was closed early Friday based on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ad.easa.europa.eu\/ad\/2022-09\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bulletin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Nov. 3 based on predictions from the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EUSST). France also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DGAC\/status\/1588462836241555458\">closed airspace<\/a>\u00a0south of Corsica from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. local time.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Eurocontrol informa de la reentrada no controlada de un cohete chino en la atm\u00f3sfera. Se ha establecido Rate Cero para determinadas zonas de espacio a\u00e9reo espa\u00f1ol y ello puede afectar al tr\u00e1fico a\u00e9reo en forma de retrasos en tierra y desv\u00edos de ruta en vuelo. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kfFBYG9s8z\">pic.twitter.com\/kfFBYG9s8z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \ud83d\ude09Controladores A\u00e9reos \ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddf8 (@controladores) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/controladores\/status\/1588426219955314689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The bulletin noted a number of cities potentially to be affected based on ground tracks including Lisbon in Portugal, Barcelona and Madrid in Spain, Marseille in France, and Rome in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advisory recommended National Aviation Authorities regularly monitor and take into consideration predictions of the Long March 5B reentry and further recommended that, \u201cthe respective authorities of the affected Member States to consider implementing and notifying airspace restrictions on a path of minimum 70 km and up to 120 km on each side of the estimated re\u2010entry trajectory, a few minutes before and after the time window.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The large prediction windows for the reentry are due to the challenges of modeling, including variables such as atmospheric fluctuations which affect how quickly the orbit of an object decays. Prediction windows are on the order of hours even within a day on the reentry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Objects in low Earth orbit travel at nearly eight kilometers per second, meaning a deviation of even a few minutes means a reentry more than a thousand kilometers away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Long March 5B reentry is a large and prominent symptom of a wider problem. A recent Nature Astronomy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-022-01718-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published earlier assesses that current practices mean there is a 10 percent chance of uncontrolled reentries causing one or more casualties over a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 50 objects with a mass of more than one ton reenter the atmosphere randomly each year, according to the Aerospace Corporation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long March 5B reentries account for four of the six largest objects making uncontrolled reentries. The reentries of the U.S.\u2019s Skylab in 1979 and the Soviet Union\u2019s Salyut 7 in 1991, at roughly 77 tons and 40 tons respectively, are the only higher mass events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s next apparent scheduled use of the Long March 5B is to launch the Xuntian observatory around late 2023 or 2024.
