{"id":140598,"date":"2023-01-17T13:22:07","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T18:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/?p=136180"},"modified":"2023-02-01T23:31:10","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T04:31:10","slug":"u-s-delivers-first-of-two-space-sensors-to-be-hosted-on-japanese-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/u-s-delivers-first-of-two-space-sensors-to-be-hosted-on-japanese-satellites\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. delivers first of two space sensors to be hosted on Japanese satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Space Force announced Jan. 17 it has delivered the first of two space sensor payloads scheduled to fly on Japan\u2019s navigation satellites.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s Office of National Space Policy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article\/2451728\/japans-office-of-national-space-policy-signs-historic-mou-with-the-us-space-for\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2020 inked an agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the U.S. Space Force to host two optical sensor payloads on Japan\u2019s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) constellation. The first sensor will fly on QZS-6 and the second on QZS-7, currently projected to launch in 2023 and 2024, respectively.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QZSS, commonly referred to as the Japanese GPS, is a positioning system composed mainly of satellites in quasi-zenith orbits. The new satellites that will host U.S. payloads will be in geostationary orbits, a key location that would allow the United States to monitor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical assets in the GEO belt.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/amostech.com\/TechnicalPapers\/2021\/Poster\/Cardona.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The optical sensors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\u2019s Lincoln Laboratory under a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ll.mit.edu\/news\/lincoln-laboratory-designing-payload-integrate-japanese-satellites\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019 agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the U.S. Air Force. The lab is working with the Japanese National Space Policy Secretariat and Mitsubishi Electric Company to integrate the sensors on QZS-6 and QZS-7. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two launches will expand the QZSS constellation to a total of seven satellites.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe delivery of the first payload represents an important milestone,\u201d said Lt. Col.
