{"id":143050,"date":"2023-02-14T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/?p=143050"},"modified":"2023-02-21T22:13:47","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T03:13:47","slug":"maxar-signs-agreement-with-umbra-for-direct-access-to-radar-imaging-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/maxar-signs-agreement-with-umbra-for-direct-access-to-radar-imaging-satellites\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxar signs agreement with Umbra for direct access to radar imaging satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Maxar has signed a contract with satellite imagery startup Umbra to get dedicated access to the company\u2019s radar imaging constellation, the companies announced Feb. 14.<\/p><p>The partnership will allow Maxar to directly task Umbra\u2019s satellites and integrate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data into its portfolio of Earth intelligence products and services, Tony Frazier, head of Maxar\u2019s public sector Earth intelligence, told <em>SpaceNews<\/em>.<\/p><p>SAR is a specialized form of remote sensing that has been in growing demand <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/iceye-ukraine-sar\/\">since Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>. SAR satellites can capture images at night, through cloud cover, smoke and rain \u2014 conditions that impair traditional optical satellites like those operated by Maxar.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Maxar has agreements with <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/maxar-receives-192-million-contract-to-supply-imagery-to-u-s-allies\/\">third-party SAR providers<\/a>, including Capella Space and Iceye, but it chose Umbra for a dedicated partnership because the company\u2019s high-resolution SAR better complements Maxar\u2019s high-resolution optical imagery, Frazier said.&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cSince the start of the Ukraine crisis, we\u2019ve seen a high demand for multi source capabilities,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd especially a demand for integrating high resolution SAR with our optical capabilities.\u201d<\/p><p>Combined optical-SAR products will be available in the second quarter of 2023 and will be fully integrated by 2024, Frazier said. The agreement with Umbra is non-exclusive and expected to extend over several years, he said. \u201cWe will be able to task their satellites and get the data to our customers on rapid timelines.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p><p>Umbra, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/umbra-raises-32-million\/\">based in Santa Barbara<\/a>, California, has five satellites in orbit. Under the contract, Maxar will have assured access to the next two, satellites six and seven. Umbra said it plans to launch a total of 24 satellites.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Headquartered in Westminster, Colorado, Maxar operates four high-resolution imaging satellites and is the primary supplier of commercial satellite imagery to the U.S. government.
